How to Use Serial Numbers in Solidworks Workgroup PDM 2014
Serial numbers are a useful feature in Solidworks Workgroup PDM 2014 that allow you to automatically assign names, IDs, or values to files, folders, items, or card controls. You can set up different serial numbers for different types of files or data, and customize the format, increment, and source of the serial numbers. In this article, we will show you how to create and use serial numbers in Solidworks Workgroup PDM 2014.
Creating a Serial Number
To create a new serial number, you need to open the Administration tool and connect to the vault where you want to use the serial number. Then, right-click on the Serial Numbers node and select New Serial Number. This will open a dialog box where you can name the serial number and choose how it will be generated.
There are three ways to generate a serial number:
From a string: The serial number is made up of a combination of static text and a running automated value. For example, you can create a serial number that has a prefix of PT- and a 4-digit number that increments by one.
From a list: The serial number is taken from a list of values that you specify. For example, you can create a serial number that uses the names of colors from a list.
From an add-in: The serial number is retrieved from a serial number add-in, created in VB or C++ using the Solidworks PDM API. You might use this option when the serial number should be retrieved from an external system such as an ERP.
For each option, you can also specify the scope of the serial number, which determines how it is shared among users and folders. The scope can be global (available to all users and folders), per user (unique for each user), or per folder (unique for each folder).
Using a Serial Number
Once you have created a serial number, you need to link it to a field on the data card where you want to use it. To do this, open the card node and locate the card that corresponds to the type of file or data that you want to use the serial number for. For example, if you want to use the serial number for Solidworks parts, open the Solidworks Parts Card.
Double-clicking on the card will open the card editor. Here, you can select the field that you want to link to the serial number, and in the Default Value section on the right column, choose Serial Number and then select the serial number that you created.
Now, when you save a file or data into the vault using this card, the field will be automatically filled with the serial number value. You can also set Solidworks to use the serial number as the file name when creating new files. To do this, go to Tools > Solidworks PDM > Options and under Vault Settings (Solidworks PDM Professional Only), select the vault and then select the part, assembly or drawing tab. Here, you can select the serial number to use and check the option to automatically name new files with serial number.
Conclusion
Serial numbers are a convenient way to automate naming and numbering files and data in Solidworks Workgroup PDM 2014. You can create different serial numbers for different purposes and customize their format and source. You can also link them to data card fields and use them as file names. By using serial numbers, you can save time and ensure consistency in your data management. 248dff8e21
