How to Find and Install a Print Driver for Mac OS X
If you have a printer that you want to use with your Mac computer or laptop, you may need to find and install a print driver that is compatible with your device and operating system. A print driver is a software that allows your computer to communicate with your printer and send print commands. Depending on your printer model and Mac OS X version, there are different ways to find and install a print driver for Mac OS X.
Method 1: Use 123.hp.com
This method works for most HP printers that support AirPrint, a feature that lets you print wirelessly from your Mac without installing any drivers. To use this method, follow these steps:
On your Mac, go to 123.hp.com.
Type your printer model in the search box, and then review the drop-down list.
If your printer is listed, an HP driver or app is available. Select your printer, click Next, and then follow the instructions to download and install software.
If your printer is not listed and the Next button is disabled, an HP driver is not available. Click My device is not listed or continue to the next method to find other options.
Method 2: Use AirPrint
This method works for most HP printers that support AirPrint, as well as other printers that are compatible with AirPrint. To use this method, follow these steps:
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar. (You may have to scroll down.)
Control-click the printer in the list on the right, choose Remove Printer, then click Remove Printer.
Click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button. A dialog appears listing any IP, shared, and Open Directory printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear.
Select your printer when it appears in the list, then do one of the following:
Use AirPrint: If you connected an AirPrint-enabled printer using a USB cable, click the Use pop-up menu, then choose AirPrint. If AirPrint isnât in the pop-up menu, your printer doesnât support it.
Use printer software installed on your Mac: Click the Use pop-up menu, then choose Select Software.
Use printer software from a file on your Mac: Click the Use pop-up menu, then choose Other. Select the file, then click Add.
Method 3: Use HP Customer Support or Apple Support
This method works for some HP printers that do not support AirPrint or have no drivers available from 123.hp.com. To use this method, follow these steps:
Go to HP Customer Support - HP printer compatibility with macOS and OS X.
Find your printer model and Mac OS X version in the table and see if there is a link to download a driver or software from HP or Apple.
If there is a link, click it and follow the instructions to download and install the driver or software.
If there is no link, your printer may not be compatible with Mac OS X. Contact HP or Apple for more information. ec8f644aee
